In response to the ongoing pressure on the Nigerian military to reclaim the towns in the hands of insurgents in the Northeast, the army has dispatched a fresh batch of 500 soldiers to support the combatants in the troubled region.
Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mike Omeri, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja.
He described the situation in Mubi as “calm and stable”, stressing that soldiers have intensified patrols as well as stop-and-search operations to fish out stray members of the terrorist group who may sneak in and out of the town.
Omeri explained that the soldiers would be deployed to reinforce the military forces in Mubi, Michika and Madagali – three major towns in Adamawa State- now threatened by the Boko Haram insurgents.
“The reinforcement in the northeast continued within the week. Contrary to media reports of widespread incursions and sacking of the areas by the insurgents, the military has dispatched more than 500 fresh troops to help fortify the security in the affected areas and protect the citizens.
“A large number of the soldiers would be deployed to Michika, Gulak, Kachingara and Mubi, among others. We believe that with this commitment and the efforts of the military, the situation in the affected areas will be brought under control.
“Meanwhile, reports from Mubi indicate that the area is calm and that troops including the police and other services, are patrolling the town effectively without problems,” he said.
